The Golden Rule of SEO is "Content is King".
At the end of the day, Search Engine spiders are nothing but programs reading written information on your site. Sure, it is important to have proper meta tags or title tags. But the best way to make sure Search Engines will index your pages and rank them well is to give them enough information to feed on; and that means relevant text.
If nothing else, make sure you place a good amount of text that relates to your business. No one should know better than you what it is you're doing, so you are the best person to write information about your products and services.
Even if you think that you're not a good writer, keep in mind that any text on your site that describes your business is better than no text at all; at least as a start. You can always use a spell check option like the one in Word or other text-editing program to make sure there are not too many typos and grammatical errors.
Any relevant text on your site is good enough for Search Engines to have something to crawl. However, the next step is to provide information that is useful and easy to read by visitors on your site. You also want to appear as professional as possible to increase the conversion of visitors into customers.
If you believe you are not a good enough writer for this, then it might be a good idea to hire a professional copywriter to give this little plus to whatever you wrote on your own, and turn your good content into great content.
A copywriter could also write an article under your name about a certain aspect of your business, and this article can be submitted to different places on the web. There are 2 benefits:
It is also a good idea to think about an area of your site with the sole purpose to attract visitors. Take our site for example. We have a Home page with a welcoming message, a Web marketing & SEO company page describing the company, an Expert SEO Services page with the list of our services and rates and a SEO quote page. All these do a great job at providing relevant information to people visiting our site.
But we also have this whole SEO tips and Techniques section you are currently reading; this source of information about SEO and web marketing is a great way to have those pages indexed very well on Search Engines and direct visitors to our site. They can then access other parts of our site to get more information about our company and services. Giving a bit of fee information, recommendations and tips around your area of expertise is an extremely efficient promotional tool!
The final step is to turn your great content into optimized content. If you are not comfortable doing it on your own, just make sure that the copywriter you hire has some SEO knowledge as well.
A common mistake people make when optimizing their text is trying to place their keyword in as many places as possible. This is commonly referred to as "keyword stuffing" and is a very bad practice that is penalized by Search Engines (they won't rank your site well). A few years back, Keyword Density (percentage of keyword appearing in your text) did matter but it's no longer the case.
It's not so much how many times you use your keywords that matters, but rather where you use them. More information on this in On-page Optimization (coming soon) but as far as text is concerned, keywords should be used preferably at the very beginning of the text and towards the end.
Also it is a great advantage to create links within your site, from your stronger pages to the less strong, using keywords as anchor text. For example, see how we used the word "expert seo services" as a link to our services. This Content Writing Tips page is full of information and is more likely to rank better than our Services page. So we are sending some "link juice" from this page to Services via the term "expert seo services" which is one of the keywords we optimized our Services page around.
Note that we are not linking back from Services to this page to avoid reciprocal linking.

As with Keyword Density, a number of techniques that might have worked at some point are now obsolete, such as bolding or italicizing keywords. Never try to hide text either, like changing the color of a keyword-stuffed paragraph to match your site's background color so that the text is invisible to visitors but will be picked up by Search Engines; your site will get penalized for it.
To sum it up: write text that relates to your business and provide useful information to your visitors, and use keywords when it makes sense.
Write great content, and trust the Search Engine spiders to do the rest!
